MERGER WITH LOCAL SURGERY

Orchard and Burton & Bransgore surgeries are pleased to announce that they are progressing a merger of their practices, which now also includes the Barn Surgery.

The final date for this merger is not yet established, but is likely to be 1st October 2017.

This merger will enable these three excellent surgeries to enhance their services for all our patients in Christchurch, Burton and Bransgore areas.  In this current climate smaller surgeries are not sustainable and merging will allow us to become more robust with a larger number and more variety of highly skilled staff who will be able to serve our patient needs more efficiently and effectively in safe familiar environments.

Partners at the Barn Surgery in Christchurch are reassuring patients that services delivered from the surgery are safe and of high quality despite a recent CQC inspection and report.

A CQC inspection of the surgery took place in May 2016 and whilst an overall rating of inadequate was given, a number of positive elements were identified relating to patient care and experience:

  • Caring services at the surgery were rated as good
  • Being responsive to people’s needs was rated as good
  • Vulnerable patients were very well supported by the team

It was also noted that patients were very positive about their interactions with staff and said they were treated with compassion and dignity.

Dr Neil Tallant, Senior Partner at Barn Surgery said “We are of course very disappointed with the overall CQC grading as all members of staff work very hard to deliver a high standard of care for those registered with the practice and we would like to apologise to patients for any anxiety that the results of the inspection could cause.

We do recognise the issues identified by the CQC which are common to problems that are encountered nationally and would like to reassure patients that the issues identified have not led to any reported incidents of harm.

Many of our patients will be aware of a recruitment problem in NHS as a whole which has continued to cause Barn pressure as we have been unable to recruit a 4th GP and a fully qualified Nurse Practitioner.  The seriousness of this problem for us was acknowledged by CQC.

We would like to express our thanks to patients for their continued understanding and support, however if anyone has any queries about the contents of the CQC report or feels service is not as they would expect we would be happy to discuss it with them”.

Partners and staff at the surgery will be working closely with CQC, NHS Dorset CCG, NHS England and Wessex LMC to prioritise the concerns that have been raised in order to address these and improve the overall rating.

Proposed changes to the out of hours service

Coastal Health GP Services (CHGPS) is a federation limited company formed by the seven GP practices in Christchurch and one in Southbourne (Marine & Oakridge).  They are currently working together to consider the potential for an extended, local, out of hours services, operating from 17:00-20:00 Monday to Friday and 08:00 to 20:00 at the weekend and bank holidays.  The service will be GP-led and would complement the existing ‘111’ service during these hours.  This initiative will not affect the usual in-hours services already provided by your practice.

Your surgery would appreciate your views on the possibility of this service and the following link will take you to a survey which they hope you might complete  https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/CoastalQaire

There is also a patient event for anyone who would like to attend to discuss this proposal with local GPs and management at St Joseph’s Church Hall, Purewell, on Thursday 3 March 2-4pm.
